Maxillary palpi gently securiform (Fig. 2) and antennomere 2 inserted excentrically on scapus; either clypeofrontal region remarkably elongated anteriad (Fig. 16) and elytra with distinct tooth between lateral margin and the carinate lateral part of basal margin (Fig. 49); or frons deeply hollowed in middle and pronotum with deep, y-shaped sulci (Fig. 1); size small, body length < 4 mm.

Maxillary palpi not securiform; antennomere 2 usually not inserted excentrically on scapus; clypeofrontal region usually not markedly elongated anteriad; elytra usually without distinct tooth between lateral margin and basal margin, although the lateral part of basal margin sometimes is carinate; size usually larger, rarely body length < 4 mm.
